Story
Triunfo Verde is a co-operative of smallholder farmers in Chiapas, Mexico, and this lot is traceable to 50 women producers. Triunfo Verde is a fair-trade and organic certified co-operative, and is made up of 372 producers, 45% of whom are women. Our export partners Azahar began buying from Triunfo Verde in 2021. A “Mujeres” lot is created every year, with variable contributors. This year’s contributing farmers are from the village of Santuario, in the Frailesca region of Chiapas. Together, the lot Azahar exported accounted for 275 bags of 69Kg of green coffee and we purchased 10% of this volume.
Four varieties make up this blend: Marsellesa, Peñasco, Oro Azteca, Bourbon and all coffee was harvested by hand, and processed on small mechanical depulpers at the farms. The varieties and processing produce a clean and balanced cup with caramel sweetness, fresh plum brightness, and a cocoa-rich finish Chiapas is, by volume, the largest coffee producing region in México as well as the one with most coffee with organic certification. The largest amount of cherry is grown by small-holder farmers that average below five hectares per capita, so organizing in formal and informal associations is critical to access to market for most smallholder farmers. This southernmost state of Mexico is brimming with rich and diverse culture, flora and fauna that encompass in every aspect the coffee crops.
Members of Triunfo Verde live in harmony with nature within the Reserva de la Biósfera Triunfo Verde. This natural reserve is divided into a buffer zone and a nucleus. The nucleus is a protected ecosystem that allows only endemic flora and fauna. Agricultural practices are permitted in the buffer zone as long as they have a symbiotic relationship with the environment. Over 25 years after founding, the Triunfo Verde co-operative remains dedicated to the mission of natural resource conservation and ensuring the commercial sustainability of their small coffee farming members.
The co-op provides technical training in cultivation, post-harvest production, as well as micro-loans, and marketing for its members. Triunfo Verde is built on a solid democratic foundation and focused on promoting gender and religious equality and non-discrimination in order to improve the “relationship between nature and humanity through ecologically sound, socially just, economically profitable, and technically viable agriculture,” according to the coop’s documentation.
