Tasting notes: panela sugar, ripe plum, and graham cracker

A woman-produced community lot from the most prized specialty growing region in Colombia.

Processing: Washed Varietal (s): Castillo, Cenicafe, Colombia, Caturra, Papayo Roast level: Medium-light (great for espresso or filter methods)

Mujeres Norte is a community blend named in honour of the four women who produced this exquisite coffee: Ederleth Lozano Molina, Arugeny Camacho Ladino, Nohora Sepúlveda de Zambrano, and Sara Díaz de Rodríguez. The varieties grown on their farms are a mix of naturally occurring and human made hybrids: Caturra and Castillo, Cenicafe 1, Colombia, and Papayo. This is a second year relationship purchase for us, and a project in collaboration with our Colombia-based export partners Azahar, to further our mission to improve gender equity across the value chain. The four women growing this coffee have farms near the municipalities of Algeciras and Palermo, and have been growing coffee for 30+ years.

Huila is one of Colombia’s most prolific coffee production departments, here, we choose to buy from Azahar, who purchases coffee in parchment, traceably and from smallholder farmers at sustainable prices (far higher than commodity prices, and following a rare cost of production + profit margin methodology in their payment structure.) Azahar is deeply invested in the future of its small farm community, helping producers train their skills, sell their harvests closer to home rather than navigate remote mountainous routes, and provide reliable sales channels to international specialty roasters like us. The coffee in this blend was hand picked at peak ripeness and processed on the farms. Cherries were depulped and long fermented in water for 24-60 hours and the green coffee beans laid to dry in marquesinas (concrete patios) for 7-15 days. We taste a delicate and layered sweetness, panela sugar and ripe plum, and a silky texture in the cup.
