Story
In just over twenty years, COCAPIL has grown from a small group of thirteen coffee producers to a regional standout that represents ~1,300 farmers throughout Ibiraci, Mogiana, Brazil. With strong commitments to fair compensation, transparency of compensation, environmental sustainability, farmer education, and finished-product quality, their growth has only made them stronger and more impactful.
In 2001, Laerce França Faleiros founded COCAPIL with twelve neighbors, and the business remains in the family today, under the supervision of Laerce’s son, Elvis Vilhena Faleiros. As Elvis puts it, “my father asked me to work here when I was 17 years old, and I fell in love.” Elvis’s affection manifests in myriad ways, with COCAPIL showcasing a wide range of outputs, from cost-sensitive regional blends all the way to award-winning micro lots. As he’s taken the reins, Elvis has implemented a more deliberated emphasis on quality — value-additions for both farmers and roasters — over sheer quantity. This “quality” is brought to life not only in the cup quality that we get to enjoy in the finished product but also via agricultural and economic education for farmers.
The particular lot that we purchased from COCAPIL is nicknamed “Mogiana Gold,” and we think it lives up to the moniker. This regional blend is assembled with qualitative and sensory benchmarks that ensure it consistently delivers a sweet, versatile, classically ideal flavor profile. With nutty, chocolatey, and creamy flavors dominating the palate, you could be forgiven for saying that this coffee “tastes like coffee,” but it’s rare to find such a perfect expression of that flavor profile, and we really are thrilled to share it.
In the cup, we think it tastes like hazelnut, milk chocolate, and torrone.
