La Sierrita

Antioquia, Colombia 333g

La Sierrita is a village in Antioquia, Colombia. Though considerable amounts of coffee are produced here, Antioquia has long been overlooked within specialty. Our partners, The Coffee Quest, have been working here for four years, providing detailed feedback and increasing compensation as quality improves. With clear results, we are thrilled to have La Sierrita on our menu. In the cup, we taste honey, guava, and pecan.

That rare balance of tropical brightness and cozy sweetness, like an impossibly crowd-pleasing vacation.

Story

La Sierrita is a village in Giraldo, Antioquia, Colombia. Although Antioquia produces a considerable amount of coffee, its name is not as commonly associated with specialty as its southern counterparts of Huila, Cauca, or Nariño. The principal reason for this is that the majority of coffee produced in Antioquia comes from large, commercial estates that focus on volume rather than quality. Nonetheless, the region is well-situated to produce top-notch offerings, and we are fortunate to be partnered with The Coffee Quest, who has been working with smallholder farmers here for several years.

We are proud to work with The Coffee Quest largely for the same reasons as their producing partners - they conduct their business fairly and transparently, with clear expectations and processes designed to ensure sustained collaborative success. With their own purchasing stations located directly in all of the regions where they work, TCQ takes the time to earnestly get to know their farming partners while simultaneously keeping close eyes on the physical and agricultural prerequisites for quality. Rather than solely purchasing farmers’ highest quality lots, they buy across a spectrum of qualities, ensuring fair compensation is given to farmers who establish a baseline quality of work and product.

In parallel with TCQ’s work in the region, the departmental government of Antioquia has also run a specialty program over the past four years, providing exhaustive education and incentivizing quality through quality competitions. Producers from the municipality of Giraldo have consistently submitted top-performing lots, and with elevations between 1,700 and 2,200 meters comprised of Caturra, Colombia, and Castillo trees, it is easy to see why. As quality and compensation standards continue to rise in Antioquia, we are thrilled to sustain our support and interest in the region.

In the cup, we taste honey, guava, and pecan.
