Colombia 333g

Tasting notes: Yellow plum, chantilly cream and orange blossom

A silky single varietal that sings of pomaceous fruit and cream.

Description

Processing: Washed Varietal (s): Castillo Supremo Roast level: Medium-light (great for espresso or filter methods) Yuri Montanchez is a woman producer in Huila Colombia. This is her first export of microlot quality, and we committed to her entire harvest. You'll find Yuri and her brothers' shared farm lots in other coffees on our seasonal menu (Colmena and Guarapo). This coffee is Yuri's exclusive plot, where she grows 100% Supremo varietal. This coffee presents a delicate pomaceous fruit, and vanilla-cream flavour profile. In the cup, we taste yellow plum, chantilly cream, and orange blossom.

Story

This might be the first time you hear about Yuri Montanchez, but we guarantee it won’t be the last. Not only is this Yuri’s first-ever solo microlot export at just 35 years old — having contributed her crop to other coffees featured on our menu (Colmena and Guarapo) with her brothers who share the family farm — but these beans are made of a separate parcel of trees Yuri grows of the Supremo varietal. Yuri’s microlot reflects years of hard work, a refinement of processes using the Monkaaba farmer-empowerment group resources, and Yuri’s unwavering spirit to help the family farm improve, and we are very proud to have contracted 100% of her microlot harvest and represent her. In 2021, the Montanchez family suffered a massive shock when their father Don Jesus passed away suddenly. With the eldest brothers already gone, it was up to the three younger siblings, Yuri, Robert, and Mauricio, to continue his legacy. They split the farm into three parts in order to sustain the family trade. Don Jesus farmed all kinds of crops throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s, but eventually fell in love with San Agustín’s robust coffee production. In 2001, he bought the farm at Los Guaduales and dedicated his life and the prosperity of the Montanchez family to growing coffee. Now, all three siblings are beginning to leave their mark, turn a profit, and fulfill their father’s dream. The land also has another story to tell. The Montanchez’s farm shares its name with a 1965 song by the influential and beloved Colombian singer Jorge Villamil, who grew up on a coffee farm himself in Neiva, Huila, just a few hours up the valley from San Agustín. “Los Guaduales” included, Villamil’s lyrics recount Colombia’s historical social struggles and depict the beauty of life in the countryside.  From one of the fathers of Colombian music to the father of the Montanchez family farm, these legacies have borne fruit that will be enjoyed for generations. We are proud to have purchased Yuri’s entire microlot harvest for sale in North America.  In the cup, we taste yellow plum, chantilly cream, orange blossom.
