Boji is a washing station in the Kochere region of southern Ethiopia, where approximately 500 farmers deliver cherry for processing. In recent years, Boji has increased premium payments, reinvesting in infrastructure, education, clean water, and electricity initiatives in the community. In the cup, we think this coffee tastes like lime, black currants, and maple candy.

Story:

Boji is a washing station located in the Kochere District of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Region of Ethiopia, just a short distance from the famed coffee town of Yirgacheffe. Approximately five hundred farmers deliver cherries to this station, where the coffee is sorted, washed, dried, and prepared for export. In recent years, as traceability-limiting factors to Ethiopia’s supply chain have loosened, the station has been able to deliver financial premiums to their contributors and to responsibly reinvest annual profits toward improved drying structures, flotation tanks for quality sorting, and farmer training programs, as well as clean water and electricity initiatives in the community. This station is one of thirteen owned and overseen by Israel Degfa, who has garnered widespread esteem for his shift from revenue-by-volume to profit-by-quality, a stark distinction from historical patterns in the areas he primarily operates.

Though coffees from this region have long been staples of specialty coffee catalogs, this will be the first time in several seasons that one has made its way to Dispatch. Our focus in recent years has been on emerging partnerships in western Ethiopia, which will be showcased later this year, but we are very optimistic about the potential to propel this relationship into the future as well, spreading our selection of stunning Ethiopian coffees across the seasons.

In Gedefa, one of many languages heard in rural Ethiopia, “Boji” means “cold weather,” something we at Dispatch know quite well. In spite of its name, Boji delivers beautifully bright and juicy flavours in the cup, where we think it tastes like lime, black currants, and maple candy.
