Decaf Muungano 333g bag

Muungano is a co-op of 4355 farmers in the DR Congo. To empower women to take part in the coop’s management, they use the Gender Action Learning System (GALS), a method of reviewing the distribution of responsibility and property. This coffee is Fair Trade, Organic, and is decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process. We think it tastes like molasses, fig, and rye.

Story:

Muungano is a cooperative in the South Kivu region of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It consists of 4,355 members with farms along the banks of Lake Kivu, near the Rwandan border. We are extra thrilled to feature a decaffeinated selection from this group after serving their classic, caffeinated offering this winter and spring.

The Muungano Cooperative formed in 2009, as coffee producers in the DRC faced tremendous hardship in the wake of the Rwandan genocide. Starting with 350 members, gender issues have been at the forefront of Muungano’s mission since the outset. With the help of Twin, an import group that works with the coop, members have implemented the Gender Action Learning System (GALS), a method of discussing, reviewing, and improving the gender balance within families and the coop.

Because these farmers live on their farmland, and because resources like chemical pesticides are limited, Muungano has been using organic methods long before receiving certification in January 2017. The region’s high altitude and volcanic soil provide excellent conditions for high quality coffee, before washing at centralized washing stations, drying on raised beds, and undergoing quality control and lot formation at Muungano’s own cupping lab. This decaffeinated offering was curated in collaboration with Swiss Water Process, regarded as one of the world’s best decaffeination enterprises. In the cup, we think this one tastes like molasses, fig, and rye.
